The Vietnam War Chronicles

Nine volumes. One war, told in the order it happened. The Vietnam War Chronicles is a chronological narrative history of the Vietnam War, beginning with the end of the Japanese occupation in 1945 and ending with the reeducation camps, the boat people and the normalization of relations in 1995. Each volume takes one stretch of the war and covers it at full length — the decisions in Washington, Saigon and Hanoi, the campaigns, and the arithmetic behind them — and then hands the reader into the next. The series runs on two disciplines. The first is sourcing: every casualty figure, unit strength, date and quotation traces to a named source, listed in the back of each volume. Body counts are reported as what MACV claimed, with the caveat attached. Where the record disagrees, the range is given rather than one number. The second is that both sides of the war are on the page. Every volume carries a full chapter from the Hanoi and NLF side, sourced to translated official histories rather than to American accounts. It is argued as well as narrated. Each volume carries one organizing question and answers it with evidence: why America paid most of the cost of a French war it refused to call its own, why Tet was a military defeat for Hanoi and why that is not what it decided, why a republic that survived two years of ceasefire war fell in a single spring to a decision rather than a battle. Where historians still disagree — whether the war was winnable, when it was lost and by whom — both readings are presented where they diverge, and the disagreement is named rather than settled quietly. The difficult subjects — My Lai, the mass graves at Hue, the bombing of civilians, the Phoenix program, the Khmer Rouge — are covered directly and with no more detail than the record requires. Written for readers who want the whole war rather than one famous year of it, and who would rather be trusted with the complications than protected from them. Start with Volume 1, A War Inherited, and read straight through.
